Most of the time, I like having the same makeup look every day. I think it works in tandem with my beauty philosophy that clothing and makeup should add to what’s naturally there, not drastically change my appearance. Plus, when I make a beauty investment like an eyelash curler or tinted moisturizer, I know that I’ll get my money’s worth since I’ll use it every day. Every once in a while, though, I’ll bust out the red lipstick and play around. Admittedly, 97% of the time my NARS Heat Wave lipstick gets wiped off with a tissue or blotted down to a stain before I leave the bathroom. Why? I’m not entirely sure. But I have a feeling the secret lies behind my middle school desire to remain (relatively) invisible. When I had my eyebrows waxed a few months ago, for example, I felt embarrassed for the rest of the afternoon each time I caught a glimpse of my overly eyebrow-penciled reflection, courtesy of the makeup artist.
Recently, I’ve been feeling more experimental, in large part thanks to renowned makeup artist Lisa Eldridge’s youtube channel. In her soothing British accent (seriously: people comment on her videos all the time saying they could fall asleep to the sound of her voice!), Lisa walks you through the application of all sorts of makeup looks. From understated and pastel to bold and contoured, Lisa has something for everyone.
I’m hoping to try Alexa Chung’s infamous cat eye (demonstrated by Lisa and Alexa herself!) and the classic Parisian look. Plus, if you want to go a little retro, here’s out to do Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look, because it never hurts to borrow from Audrey’s timeless style. Plus, you can more of Lisa’s videos, here, if you’re so inclined.
Do you like to experiment with makeup? What are some of your favorites?
